Ceva Animal Health has introduced a heartworm preventive containing the active ingredient used in popular canine medications such as Interceptor Plus, Trifexis and Sentinel Flavor Tabs.

The company’s new MilbeGuard (milbemycin oxime) Flavored Tablets are indicated for both dogs and cats to prevent heartworm disease and control hookworms and roundworms. The beef-flavored chewable, given monthly, also treats whipworms in dogs.

Ceva described MilbeGuard as the first FDA-approved generic milbemycin oxime in the United States.

“There are trusted and effective molecules available that can prevent the increased rates of heartworm disease,” said Ed Wakem, DVM, Ceva’s veterinary services manager. “With the launch of MilbeGuard, more dogs and cats should be protected so we can reduce heartworm incidence.”
